Those two girls look like Mary Spencer on the left and Linda Morris in the middle who were in my class at school. The teacher in charge of the boys looks like Miss Vesey. St Patrick's. If it's not them they are their doubles!
It's either 1960 or 61
The girl behind the policeman is Jane McNulty....it would have been their last Whit Walk before leaving school.
It looks like it could be St.Thomas's from Caroline Street.
Wigan North West railway station in the background.
Lovely photo from from a great time.
You wouldn't be able to walk there now for Taxis scattered everywhere, and who break every law in the highway code.
I worked at Wilbrooks in the office late 50s,it was in Station Rd then..does anyone know when it was moved to Wallgate,I don't remember seeing it there at all... Elizabeth,I think you're right, although Veronica seems to recognise those girls...strange isn't it..and the Holy Family seem to be on the standard.
It's definitely St Pats Maureen- I know those girls well - Linda died 20 years ago RIP. The Holy Family banner always seemed to have the Infants and juniors walking underneath. The walk would have entailed passing St Joseph's on the way back home . Some years the walk would change depending who lead out.
Hi Veronica, Thank you for putting a name to the face Jane McNulty .
Unfortunately this is driving me absolutely bonkers ! The name and face just immediately clicked with me , but do I know why ? Not on your Nelly !
Yes Maureen,I did think it was St.Thomas's,but obviously I was wrong as Veronica knew the girls who were from St.Patrick's.
Those girls look in their twenties...Surely not at school.
X pat: I was 'flummoxed' at first with regard to Jane as she always wore glasses previously, obviously she didn't need them when she was older. On all our school photos she is wearing glasses. Just in case you knew her she lived in Hardybutts and had lovely strawberry blonde hair. There were quite a few 'red heads' at St Pat's - due to the Irish ancestry I think!
Elizabeth - it was a good guess with the procession coming up Wallgate, I think we must have passed through St Joseph's parish.
Yes Elizabeth,I think we both must agree,Veronicas right.
Much appreciated Veronica.
There is a walking day photo of the same year - item 26013 with St Patrick's banner and I am on it 2nd from the right - we are wearing the same white hats but different dresses.
