St Marks Newtown, (2nd Wigan) Boys Brigade Band, in Norfolk Street, Newtown waiting to be called into the Walking Day procession on Ormskirk Road, in June 1969. The Band of ’69 had recently won the Wigan Battalion, plus Lancashire & Cheshire District BB Bands competitions, and went on to repeat the same in 1970 thanks (in no small measure) to the ideas, enthusiasm and energy of Band Officer Derek Gibson.

They are from left to right:
Drum-Major - Geoffrey Bentham (of Bentham’s Chippy, Victoria Street)
Band Officer – Derek Gibson
Side Drummers – Syd Abbott, Kenneth Peat, David Holland, John Oliver
Bass Drummer – Stephen Corless
Buglers – John Don Duncan (won District solo Bugler), Stephen Cook and Ian Ashcroft, apologies to the lad behind the bass drummer and far right of picture my memory fades . . .

Thanks to Michael Mason who has contributed numerous photos and comments about St Marks and Newtown, which spurred me into digging out this photo, with all the memories that come with it.

Hi Stephen, indeed it is Tony Dainty, and with Peter Duncan remembered by Derek we have a full compliment of names for the St Marks BB Band of '69. Wonderful times.

Stephen.

Shame Nigel is out of shot. I was a friend of his at WGS and remember going to the Vicarage as several of us were into naval war-gaming and the huge vicarage floors (huge to those of us from smaller terraced houses) were great substitutes for the North Atlantic.

To Geoff Bentham, I have seen your post of Ernie & Margarets wedding in 1907 . I am from the same line of the Latham's and would appreciate a discussion with you.
Please email me .
Kind Regards Peter Francis

Yes I can confirm that it was me hidden behind the bass drummer. What a band we had that year! Winning the District band competition two years running was a great achievement because we were up against some good bands from Manchester. It wouldn't have happened without Derek's leadership.

Great photo Jeff, which refreshed many happy memories of my years in 2nd Wigan, the wonderful officers, and the friends we made through Boys' Brigade
